Ins and Outs of Movie Casting

So how does the casting agent decide on whom to choose for the right role? What theory or requirements do they use when they start movie casting? The fact of the matter is that casting agents are always out looking for new and fresh faces. They walk the malls as we do, go to the same places that we do. Often they encourage their candidates to submit a photo and a resume. This is their job.

Great ins and outs of Movie Casting

Most movie casting is done by auditioning actors and actresses and drudging through cattle calls to the public. An audition is where an actor/actress is invited to “try out” for the role they are cast for. They will receive an act from a script and will have to portray the character the best way they can in front of the agent, producer and director. Depending on how flexible, vocal and intuitive the candidate is will rely greatly on his raw ability to act believable in any situation. Most actors are found through casting notices or cattle calls. These cattle calls usually bring in a certain demographic as described in great detail on the casting notice published online and through out the geographic area. Each person is met and either disqualified or marked for contention depending on the ability to act out as the camera rolls.

One by one, the casting agent continues the movie casting process by selecting 3 or 4 out of 10,000 possibilities. Then it is up to the casting agent to bring these candidates back for another round. Each time another audition occurs it is to eliminate the candidate with the most flaws. The movie casting process is long and drawn out for a reason, to put the most deserved candidate in the role. Usually at the end there are 2 candidates in mind. Because some people have a high price or esteem issue they may place too high of a value on their ability to act, thus pricing them out of contention.

This may leave one person standing. This person will be offered the opportunity to play this role because of their persistence and willingness to work hard during the movie casting process. It is their best interest to find a professional who wants to be a part of the science of movie making not a drag around the production of the entire film. Movie casting is a continuous process and never ending for the casting agent.
