If you dont want to cause yourself unnecessary stress, you should arrive early and be prepared to wait for some time, before starting your performance. As general rule, dont have expectations about how long or short this audition will be, just be prepared for both. Also, be ready to answer personal questions, be open to any suggestions and try to get on with it.
There are some major differences between auditions for the television and the auditions for the stage. The both ask you to learn the lines, but in television you should be prepared to adapt to different readings of the story and/or any new information that may emerge. Unless youre asked to play to the camera, try to always play to the person who is reading/performing the other character or characters. One useful idea is to take some bottled water into the audition room to relieve any drying of the mouth from nerves.
In an audition for stage, you must understand the impulses that drive your character. This is more that learning the lines it is about getting inside that character, feeling his thoughts, understanding his impulses and the nature of the space the character is in. Also, remember that what seems a long time to you will be a short time for your audience, and dont forget to enjoy the experience.
In auditions, casting agents and directors are usually looking to identify your type, your skill levels, experience and versatility. They want to do this as quickly and efficiently as possible. This is why you should try to look comfortable and enjoy the experience (so you give a good performance), be good (they always want good actors on their books) and well organized (so the process doesn't take too long). Your preparation and the skill level you have developed to this point will generate the quality of your performance. Neither of these factors will change in the time that you perform the audition, so just relax and allow those factors to work for you.
In fact, if the scene youve selected has a turning point in it, then this will enable your character to experience a new set of circumstances and show your versatility in playing these circumstances. If your scene is short, then you may be asked to try it again with some different ingredients. This will demonstrate your ability to process direction and cope with change. So be prepared to change and enjoy it!
